Sugar and Spice (Sugar Adopted) - UPDATE 7 January

After the shelter, I headed to SJVH to meet up with Sarah and Fam which includes Sugar and Spice. I didn’t realize how much I missed them until I saw them. There is something about Sugar that puts you at ease and makes you feel whole. She forces an acceptance of life that is similar to the feeling I get every morning (if I’m receptive) when I feed Hooch. There is something about being part of a life that is less fortunate than yours but somehow seems just as full, or more full. Her disability has caused her difficulty and struggle but it hasn’t for a second slowed her down or affected the way she loves-LESSON!! Other then their comfortability, what I noticed was sociability, meaning they have both made great strides around human and other dogs that have made them more adoptable. Remember gang, they are STILL UP FOR ADOPTION!
Spice leg surgery was a resounding success and her leg seems to be healing well. Sugar is not really “walking” in her wheel chair but she is enjoying the heck out of it. Her chair helps her to feel a part of and it does get her muscles working and her confidence up (as though she needed a boost..) Remember that these two were found abandoned and struggling for survival together in the wilds of Bakersfield. Spice-girl could have left her sister but instead took care of her and now, because of your help and this community that we are a part of, they are thriving and have a bright future ahead. Their focus now is adoption, so please help us share their courageous story and find them a forever home!

These two go together like Sugar and Spice…so that’s what I’ve decided to call them. I have never met a cuter pair! When I saw the video of them inside the City Shelter in Bakersfield the other day, it looked to me like they were pretty quiet, somewhat sullen. So when I went to photograph them yesterday, I prepared myself for a sad scene. I imagined the two of them being afraid, especially the little one — whose spinal issue (or whatever it is that causes her back legs to be immobile) — I was sure would make her emotionally fragile as well as physically. BOY WAS I WRONG! Shelter staff member Angie and I coaxed the two out of their crate and walked with them into the fresh air. As soon as we set them down on the grass, they CAME TO LIFE like the two happiest, silliest little girls you’ve ever seen! The bigger sis, (our Spice girl) was loving and playful with little Sugar Baby, but not overly protective. Spice ran and hopped, while Sugar rolled on her back and solicited belly runs in the sunshine. I could go on forever about these two. But instead, I’ll stop now and let you watch the video. Enjoy
