Miss Blanche Devereaux

Happy Sunday Morning, Mutt Lovers!

If you don’t already know, this fluffy little hunk of  preciousness is Miss Blanche (Devereaux, naturally - since I’m the one who named her and I’m an eternal child of the eighties). Blanche is an older girl, my guess is between ten and twelve years old. She has only one eye due to a congenital condition. Blanche has been with us for a couple of months now, in the loving and capable care of her foster provider, Holly Clark. We are all baffled by the fact that Blanche hasn’t yet been adopted. But it struck me recently that she would be a perfect little addition to the Miracle Mutts crew.

Blanche (like all dogs, and for that matter people) has a unique story to tell, and many things to teach us. Like so many other of the mutts we rescue, Blanche doesn’t realize that she has a disability, And therefore she doesn’t. Disabilities only disable us when we give them the power to do so. And as we all know, dogs can teach humans so much about the ability to simply exist in the moment, happy, full of life and devoid of hang-ups. not only is Blanche not disabled, she  also isn’t hung up about her age, or her weight. We can learn tremendously from both of these facts, also. Being hung up on age is a futile pursuit. Again, it’s another lesson in enjoying the life we have while we have it; trying to appreciate every season and the gifts that come with growing older and wiser. Blanche’s weight condition, on the other hand, is meant to teach us a sort of opposite lesson.

While obsessing on body image - especially to a chorus of negative self talk in our heads - is not healthy, neither is being overweight or underweight. We so much thank Holly for helping Blanche to lose a couple of pounds during her stay with the Clark family. And we are going to continue working on getting Blanche down to a healthy weight. This will take strain off of her little old knees, and relieve her heart and lungs of their working-overtime duties. We will take lots of little walks, and Fred is already trying (so hard) to rile Blanche up enough to play with him I am so happy and feel so lucky to have this little love muffin staying with Fred and me for now. Blanche is still up for adoption, and perhaps when we take her to visit a nursing home or other similar facility, we might find her a nice elderly person with whom she can spend the remainder of her (or their) golden years. In the meantime, I will keep you all posted on how we’re getting along. Enjoy your weekend, everyone! I know we will!  - Liz
