Buford is the kind of dog Marley’s Mutts was created to help. His size, breed and incarceration made him virtually unadoptable. He would have been euthanized had we not stepped up for him.  MM started out as me bringing dogs like Buford home from the shelter and rehabilitating them one or two at a time. What was an “I” has become a powerful “WE” which in this case includes Tamara and her wonderful husband. This foster family brought Buford in to their home, straight from the shelter, and would not accept defeat although most would have surrendered.

Buford is a 2 year old, 107 pound American Bulldog, which means he is very powerful and potentially dangerous. Dogs like Buford who have been incarcerated for long periods of time are unpredictable, scared and require tremendous vigilance and tact. Things did not start well but Tamara rolled with the punches and, with the help of our trainer Lisa Porter, were able to kiss the dragon on the nose and help him face his fears. Buford is now 100% assimilated into her family, which includes children and several dogs, and is awaiting his destiny. However, that required setting strong boundaries that included a separation period from the kids while Buford adapted to the environment, and slowly introducing them over a few days and letting Buford know that excitement was NOT going to be tolerated around children or smaller dogs. He is only allowed to interact while relaxed. We are not comfortable at this time adopting him out to a family with children or smaller dogs at this time unless they are willing to do a few training sessions first to establish boundaries and prove that they can handle our big boy. He deserves that, he has been moved around enough and we want his next move to be his last.

Few dogs have a visage that commands respect like Buford does, he is just impressive. Being 100+ pounds, he is controllable on a leash if handled correctly but takes a strong, calm and assertive leader to show him that he can relax and let his handler take over. If you are interested in adopting Buford, please fill out an application below. We will consider immediate adoption without mandatory training sessions if you have no children or small dogs in your home.
