Lessons Learned

Many of you know that I recently returned from about a week at the Dog Psychology Center training with Cesar Millan and several other trainers. Myself and Sean Casey from Sean Casey Animal Rescue were awarded scholarships that covered our experience and what an experience it was. I won’y get into too much in this post but I would like to tell one story.

Cesar and the other trainers had me taking care of a very excited pit bull-we’re talking red-zone- for two days. I rode her on the bike, jogged her and after a few days was still a bit perplexed. Unexpectedly, Cesar brought me up on stage to try and get her on the treadmill. Everyone in that tent knew that this was an impossible feat and that I was probably just going to look like a dope-but Cesar is always teaching. I failed miserably of course, and that dog had no intentions of getting near that treadmill, much less walking on it!

Cesar spent the next 20 minutes with her on stage, in front of everybody, working to get her on the treadmill. What started out as violent refusal gradually made way to acceptance and I honestly believe that the dog his will was stronger than hers! He could have paused and picked up the lesson the next day but he pressed on, wanting to make the point that if you know that you can do it and your resolve is iron clad, then you will! We trainers and rescuers often find ourselves in positions like this where a dogs energy seems to be too much. This exercise really taught us that if you are patient and steadfast you will succeed always.

By the end of the lesson, she was walking on the treadmill of course and had me come back up and get her on myself. The next day I and few others very easily guided our “crazy” pit bull on to the treadmill. Lesson learned.
