As you may have seen today on Facebook we rescued Smokin Joe. He’s a boxer in very very bad shape, but we are doing our best to give him a fighting chance as we always do with all the pups that come to us. At this point X-rays, Blood work, and some other tests have been done and at first glance it appears he has a systemic fungal infection that has spread all over his body. The infection has rendered the back half of his body basically paralyzed, but he’s fighting with all he’s got. The bills to run the diagnostics and the future ones to get him back on his feet are going to add up quick, so we have started this ChipIn to help cover the initial and future costs to get Smokin’ Joe back on his feet and boxing again. Please spread the word wherever you can on Facebook, Twitter, or anywhere else you think could help. With all the great followers we have if everyone just donated .50 cents we would make the goal of $1500 in no time at all.. The ChipIn is below so please help out however you can.

Z, Smokin’ Joe, and the Mutts ~

Update 5-11-12: We had to put Smokin’ Joe to sleep this morning. We were going to keep going with his treatment if he had shown signs of improvement or was at least eating. If you looked closely at the X-Rays you can see that his entire body- knees, joints, spine, ribs- is raveged by a fungal infection that makes his bone look like its dissolving. His X-Rays were sent to a Valley Fever specialist in Ohio who, frankly, was flabbergasted that he was still alive. Dogs (or people) with this condition arein an extraordinary amount of pain and there was no chance that we could return him to anything like a decent living situation. He fought hard- most would not have survived for that long. At least he will pass over the rainbow bridge with the Kims, Chris, Dr. Freng and the rest of the gang by his side, comforting him.

We have closed the ChipIn that we had going for Joe. It truly does say how much you all care by the amount of money we raised for this guy in such a short time $1040.00 in less that 20 hours of us asking for the Marley’s Community for help. We can’t put to words how much it means to all of us here at the rescue to know that there are amazing people out there that will go the distance to help a pup they have never met. It truly warms the heart… The money that was raised to help Joe will go towards the bills that we amassed since yesterday, and anything left over will go towards a burial box and marker for Joe. Any remaining donations after that will be kept in wait for the next pup in need of help.

Thank you all again for your effort…

R.I.P. Smokin’ Joe, know that in the short time you were with us that you were loved by many. Now go play in the clouds…

We have had our share of characters here at Marley’s Mutts but this little guy might take the cake. His name is Kenny Powers and he is a 1½ year old, Old English bull dog. Kenny came to our attention a month or so ago when he came in as a stray to the Bakersfield Animal Shelter; he was extremely skinny and stunk SO BAD that, despite his cuteness, it was hard to share space with him. The Vet staff found that he had several problems including a major cleft pallet, both soft and hard that needed repairing. To make matters worse, someone had shoved a towel into the hole in his pallet in a half-witted attempt to solve his issues. The vet removed the stinky clog from his mouth and sutured closed his soft pallet problem.

We need to have an oral specialist fix his cleft pallet, which is really a gaping hole in the roof of his mouth which causes a variety of problems. For starters, he has a difficult time keeping down food and has to be fed special concoctions like chicken with lasagna noodles (to help it slide down his throat). He also has difficulty breathing and sounds like a farty-sneeze with sleep apnea!!! I’m taking him to a specialist in LA on Friday (May 11th) to get a proper assessment. We know the procedure will cost a few thousand dollars and we need to raise at least that much to cover his care. He is part of the pack now, and despite being difficult to swallow (no pun intended) for some of the other dogs, he has been welcomed in.

Please help us get Kenny the necessary care that he needs and deserves. He’s made it this far and deserves the best of care.

KENNY SURGERY UPDATE: jut got the estimate in from the Oral Surgeon for Kenny’s cleft pallet surgery and we are looking at a cool 5000.00!! That’s quite a chunk of change but he needs it or he could die if he aspirates something. I meet with the specialist in TO on Monday morning to go over the procedure. We need to not g up the donations and try and make our mark. Thanks everybody– SPREAD THE WORD!!!
Prince is a 35 pound, four month old healthy boy. He was found on the side of the road with his dead mother. He refused to leave her, but he was scared of his rescuers. It took them hours to catch him. As soon as he was brought to his foster home, his demeanor immediately changed. He started wagging his tail and moved on from his sad past.

Prince is a very goofy puppy. His tail only stops wagging in his sleep: he is always happy! He enjoys interacting with dogs of all sizes. He wants to be around his family all the time so that he can get lots of pets and cuddles. He trying his best to learn about potty training, chewing, and walking on the leash. He is a smart boy, but he still has a good amount of time left in his puppy stage.

One of the cutest things Prince does is shout “roo” in the morning. He wants to share with the world how excited he is for a new day.

If you are interested in adopting Prince, you must fill out the “foster application” found on our website. A phone interview and home visit will also be involved in the adoption process.
